View Other Student Work

Hey guysss, back at it again with another blog. Today in class we watched a sequence of videos that other students created, and we now have to review them. So, here's my review of each video

1) Dare to Thrill

This first video was actually probably in my opinion the best one. The beginning I would say starts off with an over the shoulder shot of the group and a series of tracking shots when the people are going up the stairs and also faint music which hypes up the audience so we can probably tell that they are having fun in the film as of right now. Then there is a master shot of the setting which is a parking garage. The video also has a variety of focus in the clip, like rack focus when the focus changes from the people to the car that they found. Then after when they enter the car there is a montage of them turning up the music, driving the car and speeding around the parking garage as well as the road. There continues to be different focuses and tracking shots and then when they get to the speed bump there is a ground shot. When they stop and open the trunk, I feel like the one part of the clip is two technical elements which would be POV shot like the view from the trunk which is also a low angle. The clip also ends with a feeling of suspense because of the reactions of the people but also the restriction of showing what's in the trunk.

2) Always Watching

I see the vision of the story, but I don't believe the idea was well executed. The beginning with the title felt rushed and it was just a plain black screen with a transition. There was some good editing such as jump cuts from when the guy was speaking to when the guy is walking with his friend. There is also a close up shot and over the shoulder shot as well as ominous music to fit the theme of the video. High angle was also shown in the video when the tape was being put on the other guy's mouth to maybe show that he is in danger and that the guy putting on the tape is in control at the moment. The end was so abrupt as well. I think my group would learn from the mistakes of this one, like we'll take time on our beginning with the title because that's what really bring people in and also not to rush the process on our film and give us enough time to film. We can also input angles to match the mood at the moment so that the audience can understand the emotion more like they did in this film which was good.

3) The Blue Boar

It starts off with a voiceover and a girl in blue which can give the representation of sadness. There was rule of thirds included when the girl was mainly of the left side of the screen and the rest was tress and green. There was shallow focus when it focused of the plat with the butterfly on it, then extreme close up to show the girls shock on her face. There is a use of natural lighting as they are using the light from the sun and a ground shot to show us that now the girl is barefoot. The editing in this video is good, there was use of transitions, and it was the only one with a long voice over in the intro so far. I think my group can interpret that into our video as well as the close up shot to really focus on the emotion given from a person.

4) White Coat

The video starts with low-key lighting of the name. The there is a focus pull in the intro Aswell, so the focus changes from what's in front of the camera to what's in the background. There is suspenseful music to match the energy of the film so far. They use cross cutting to allow the audience to see different crucial events happening at the same time. There were colors like blue and red in the video which usually mean anger for red and sadness for blue. Theres a dolly shot leading into a extreme close-up shot. When making our video we can corporate the sequence of colors like in the video

5) Stalker

The start of the video is very quiet, there is little to no noise except the alarm sound when she wakes up. There was then the use of sound effect which was of a camera taking pictures, then the girl turns, and we get a close up shot to see the worry on her face. There is the use of natural lighting in this video as well because when she wakes up, she opens the blinds allowing the sunlight to fill the room. We then get the title with a focus pull when the letters turn blurry and all we see is the black screen mainly then it goes to an over the shoulder shot of the girl in school looking for work in her folder. This video uses a lot of sound effects like the taunting music that plays when she finds the note in her pouch and the sound of a heartbeat pounding as she runs out of the building. I think my group could be able to incorporate the use of sound effects because that would give our video the dramatic effect that might be needed.

6) Nostalgia

The video starts off with music sort of a calming kind, natural light, and a fade in/out of the title and the credits. There is then a medium shot of an older lady and then an extreme close up of her face and it seems as though she is examining the painting that the video is focused on. There is no dialogue but there is mainly the music. There was high angle and a zoom out of the old picture. The video was good, but I didn't really see any new elements used and there was not much of a story line, but it is good though.

7) Rise

There was a POV, low angle, and a shallow focus all in the one part of the guy grabbing his equipment. There was music and a high angle of him walking to the field. There was a ground shot of the ball rolling in the grass and towards the camera. The music also switched from like slow calm music to hype music which went along with the guy and his actions and probably his mood as well. There was handheld tracking shot of the guy coming in to look at the one playing soccer. They used over the shoulder shot and focus pull all at once to sort of allow us to see what he's seeing and to focus our attention to what he's looking at. We can learn from the music they put in to match the mood like I said with the previous video, I believe it really allows the audience to feel the mood of the moment and it changes the mood of the audience as well.

8) Dear Lover

This video starts off with soft music, a series of shots, and then leads off in a voiceover. There is a medium close-up of a girl sitting on the ground. There is then an over the shoulder and a shallow focus of her grabbing the flower. There is some cross cutting from her outside when she was younger to her now older and talking about the day she ran away. There was use of a high angle when the other girl was joining the one on the ground and then an overhead shot of them sitting together. The cross cutting was a great way to tell this story because it allowed the audience to know the thoughts of the girl as her older self when she had to leave, and it pulled it all together rather than the audience having to figure out everything that's happening.
